while teaching a unit on worms at school.
Friday afternoon, I was picking up the kids from school, as soon as I was in earshot of Meg, she exclaimed, "My teacher said that I can take this worm home an keep it for my pet! I named it Mr. Wiggles!"
I began to wiggle just thinking of a pet worm;
I felt wiggly inside as I thought of how to tell Meg that a worm would not be a good pet to have in the house.
Upon arriving home, Megan took her new little friend out to the back patio and made a nice home for him in a pot of dirt.
(Whew!)
I didn't have to say one thing to her about the need to have her new pet live outside, she already knew. (Wiggled out of that one easily...)
And little Miss Meg couldn't be happier!
Oh Megan! How you will love the worm!
I remember when I was about Megan's age. We had a "Meal-worm" project at school. We brought home a family of meal-worms that we fed and raised. I loved feeding them apples.
I took good care of my worms. Eventually my Mom let me know that the mealworms were aquiring a pungency that was a bit offensive. I told Mom that it wasn't the mealworms, it must be something else.
I believe my Mom was somewhat patient with me until the rest of the family lobbied hard for the removal of certain residents that were offensive to the olfactories.
In the family council, my vote was over-ruled. The meal-worms returned to the earth that gave them life.
Ah the worms we love....

Megan: I'm glad you are feeling better - - enough to have a pet worm.
Jonathan: I don't remember the story about the WORM!! I absolutely made SQUIRM!!

Hahaha... That's not a bad idea. I know that my roommate, Michelle, wants a pet... Maybe I'll suggest a worm to her... I'll let you know how that goes.... :)
