Oh the things parents learn from their college-going children.
When we visited Nathan during the summer, he announced to his dad,
"You're not really going bald; the type of hair that grows on your arms (soft, baby fine) is now growing on the top of your head!"
He learned it in Anatomy. :)
It seemed he was sharing his new found knowledge with his dad in order to relieve any frustration that Jonathan might have been feeling over getting thinner (on top).
I don't know if it helped Jonathan feel better or not but it gave me plenty of material to work with over the summer. We've shared quite a few laughs!
Last Friday, upon arriving on campus, Nathan told his dad that he reminded him of a penguin.
A penguin?! (I love penguins! But that NEVER, EVER occurred to me!)
Jonathan asked Nathan in what way?
Nathan told him that his hair looked like it had tufts like a penguin.
So his baby-fine, arm-like hair is now tufting...
More good laughs and penguin jokes!
Good stuff.
We took Nathan out to see great-grandma. While visiting her in my uncle's home, the topic of weather, heat vs. cold, came up. My parents, aunts and uncle were weighing in on their preference when Nathan stated, "My mom is pretty much a reptile!"
I looked at the faces of those in the room, who seemed slightly shocked at his statement.
The definition of a reptile came to mind: any cold-blooded vertebrate of the class Reptilia, comprising the turtles, snakes, lizards, crocodilians, amphisbaenians, tuatara, and various extinct members including the dinosaurs.
I first saw myself as a snake, eww..., then I became an australian speaking gecko...better but still not the image I have been going for...
As I began to question, Nathan clarified his rather scaly declaration by letting us all know that I am always cold and I love the heat!
True, true...but a reptile, really?!
When Jonathan and I returned to the DFW area and 97 degree heat, he broke into an immediate sweat. I, however, felt warm and comfortable. While feeling content with my feet warm for the first time in days, I looked at him perspiring and withering; he was clearly overheated.
That was when I realized, it's true...
he IS a penguin and I AM a reptile!
When a penguin marries a reptile do they have cold or warm blooded children?

Nathan does really enjoy telling people about what he has learned... especially Anatomy. He always smelled like dead people too... lovely. :)

Jonathan,
After this evening's poll, it looks like we came in with 2 and 2.
Girls are more on the reptile side of life and the boys are penguin-ish...
Funny.

LOL!! I love it! I am more like a reptile too... I think it's great you finally discovered your species.
